====1.1.1 fundamental economic problem of scarcity 基本经济问题（稀缺性）====
*绝大多数resources都是scarce稀缺的。
*Needs是满足人们最低生活质量的需求，是有限的。Wants是已经满足最低生活质量的人们追求更高标准的需求，是unlimited无限的。
*基本经济问题是scarce resources与unlimited wants之间的矛盾，由于资源具有稀缺性，无法满足一切wants，人们需要通过efficient resource allocation去尽可能地满足各项经济活动对资源的需求。

====1.1.2 Need to make choices at all levels (individuals, firms, governments) 各个经济层面都需要做出选择====
*经济主体（Economic agents）主要包括：个人individuals, 公司firms, 政府governments，如果包括对外贸易，则还有外部经济体foreign economies。
*由于资源稀缺，不可能满足无限的愿望，因此人们需要在相互可替代的多重愿望alternative wants中做出choices。一般按照是否紧急urgent进行排序。
*按照“理性人假设hypothesis of rational man”，各个经济主体的选择遵循如下规律：
**Individuals会选择utility maximisation。（效用最大化：商品对人们的有用程度最大化）
**Firms会选择profit maximisation。（利润最大化：公司赚的钱最大化）
**Governments会选择social welfare maximisation。（社会福利最大化：对全社会总体的收益最大化）
*每个人的选择情况存在偏好（a scale of preference），一个人放弃掉的选择可能是另一个人的必选项。
*每个人随着年龄增长，选择偏好也可能发生变化。

====1.1.3 nature and definition of opportunity cost, arising from choices 从选择中引申出来的机会成本的本质与定义====
*Opportunity cost，机会成本。指的是对所有可能的choices进行排序，在选择了一个最优选择后，放弃掉的次优选择（next best alternative）的价值。【最优选择标准参照1.1.2】
**注意：对opportunity cost的计算仅限于次优选择这一个选择，且绝大多数情况下以价值value来衡量。
*经常用PPC来表现opportunity cost。【参照1.5.2】
*对经济政策的评价经常会考虑到opportunity cost，政府支出花在了某一方面，就无法花在其他的方面，放弃掉的方案带来的经济价值就构成opportunity cost。

====1.2.1 economics as a social science 经济学是一门社会科学====

*经济学的本质在于研究如何进行最有效率的资源分配how to allocate scarce resources in the most efficient way。

*经济学是社会科学的一种，研究数据主要来源于观察与搜集，难以通过精确的实验得到。
*经济学研究主要致力于研究大多数个体/国家的行为，因此即使是经济规律，也存在较多不确定性。
*经济学能够通过做假设assumptions来规范研究过程，控制研究中的变量影响。
*经济学会将经济简化simplicity以寻找经济规律（理论研究阶段），有时也会通过特定案例的分析来寻找规律（案例研究阶段）。当发现可能的规律后，会逐渐放松假设以还原现实，判断该规律是否能够指导现实（实证研究阶段）。
**经济简化出的图像或理论规律theory称为经济模型model，可借用数学知识对其进行下一步研究。
*经济学的研究方法主要是：发现问题（AO1）-做出假设-收集数据（AO2）-分析研究（AO3）-得出结论-反思评价（AO4）-继续发现问题-…，构成研究闭环。【此处可作为essay写作路径参考】
*经济学分为微观经济学microeconomics和宏观经济学macroeconomics。（随着研究的深入，二者界限逐渐模糊。）
**微观经济学microeconomics：研究个体市场individual markets，如一件商品、一个企业等。
**宏观经济学macroeconomics：研究整个国家或区域的经济情况，如国家的经济增长、失业情况、通货膨胀情况等。

====1.2.2 positive and normative statements (the distinction between facts and value judgements) 实证与规范陈述（事实与价值判断的区别）====
*positive statements是实证陈述。无论结论对错，只要能够找到事实证据actual evidence来证实或证伪（证据可以来自过去、现在或将来），就是positive statements，陈述是客观的（objective）。
*normative statements是规范陈述。陈述内容包含个体价值判断value judgement，无法判断对错。通常是一些意见、建议、观点及主张。陈述是主观的（subjective）。
**常见normative statements的类型：
***（1）should/need/ought to +建议/观点
***（2）句子中包含good/bad/best/worst/fair/unfair/important/likely等主观意义强烈的形容词。
***（3）It is … that…句型，表示强调。
*两者的终极判断标准：阅读句子含义，判断有事实证据还是主观看法。

====1.2.3 meaning of the term ceteris paribus “ceteris paribus”的含义====
*ceteris paribus：All things remain equal. 在研究A如何影响B时，除了A、B之外，其他所有因素都保持不变。（类似科学研究中的控制变量法，便于发现要研究的A、B两变量间的关系。）

====1.2.4 importance of the time period (short run, long run, very long run) 时间期间的重要性（短期、长期和超长期）====
*short run：短期。至少有一个at least one生产要素保持不变unchanged。
*long run：长期。所有生产要素都可以变化variable。但技术、法律条文、社会文化等key inputs关键性投入保持不变。
*very long run：超长期。所有生产要素都可以变化，而且技术、法律条文、社会文化等key inputs关键性投入也可以发生变化。
*三者的终极判断标准：生产要素的变化性（注意：和时间长短无关，不同行业的长短期并不相同）
